i shoot with a d200 and a 90mm tamron macro.

I keep the camera on manual for the fish store shots.
I know the light, and I just adjust the settings as needed.
Most of the time the ISO is 400-800 and I try to shoot at least
as fast as 125 shutter speed.

How do you get it so perfectly black in the background?

first the backgrounds of the tanks are black, so that helps.

by shooting in manual I can adjust the exposure to darken the background.

ideally you want the subject to be as far from the background as possible. I do a few test shots and adjust the shutter speed so the background is dark, then adjust the aperture so the subject is lit well.
in photoshop using curves you can then boost the contrast further, this separates the subject from the background nicely.

super cool!!! we got more awesome photographers on the forum now =) great photos. that trimma goby is great, I just got two of them last week =)

we are seeing a lot of them for sale in NY now. Do you have them in the SF area? ours range in price from $90 to around $400.

Nope, none in the BA, nor have we had any before.... that I have seen or heard about :)
