fireworks

So, July 4th is right around the corner.
I was told my a friend of mine to switch my camera (40D) to mode, and use bulb exposures. Also, I was recommended to use a smaller aperture (f/8-f/10), and a lower ISO (100, 200).
My question is ... in bulb mode, how do you know how long to keep the shutter open for without overexposing?
Any other recommendations, or methods for capturing the fireworks?

Take a shot and see? Also I would think you could lower your aperture to even less than 8-10 because the fireworks will probably be quite a distance from you and will not require you to have a great DOF.

Well, I want to get as much feedback as I can prior to the fireworks. I'd like to minimize the amount of time I am fiddling with my camera settings making major adjustments while the fireworks are going on.
It is true though, the fireworks will be quite a ways from me.

Thanks Mike- I actually used manual mode, and shot using BULB exposures. The shutter speed ranged from 3-8 seconds, some a little more, some a little less.

I'd say it was a success -super fun taking pictures of fireworks! This was my first time giving this a try, so I am definitely open to critique, and feedback. Thanks!
