kalk topoff method- in-overflow

So right now my aqualifter takes straight H2O and dumps it into my little overflow box (no sump, it just pumps up to a fuge and gravity returns).
I was thinking about adding kalk to the setup and came up with this idea:

say overflow box height = 11", max water height (powerloss) 11.75"

~.5" PVC pipe, ~12.5"
~1" pvc pipe, 12"

1" pvc cap

Cut out a section of the wall of the .5" pipe for about 1" at the "bottom" end.
Cap bottom end of 1" pipe, fill with X amount of kalk powder
Put .5" pipe into 1" pipe, cut side down.
Place entire setup into overflow box and lash appropriately, do not allow to lean against working side of overflow box.

aqualifter as usual from reservoir into .5" pipe (should be sticking out above the 1" pipe, which should be well above water level in overflow box). water flows from aqualifter to .5" pipe, through/above settled kalk paste, then up&out 1" pipe.

Sound good? Let me know what you guys think.

It's a small tank (20g) and I don't lose that much to evap most days. Ambient room temp stays around 60ish or so. I don't think it runs all that often, and a 3g reservoir lasts me around 2 weeks if not more. And yes, water comes straight from a 3g bottle of RO water (I know, I knwo, should be DI, but TDS =3 for $0.25/g at the water store makes it all too convenient). Im a little worried about nuking my tank w/ the kalk, but I don't know how else to really go about it.
