I am getting back into my reef but before I faded out of corals, people were exploring with growing beneficial algae in the sump and people claimed it would reduce the bad algae in your tank and improve the water quality? Is this a thing or not something to look into? I have a 180 gallon tank and have one of those 100 gallon pond containers as my sump with my protein skimmer & small reactor inside but there is plenty of room if this is a good thing or not? Any thoughts?

Algae scrubbers, in various shapes and forms, are very effective in nutrient export, which of course lowers overall nutrients.

1) Setup matters
Do your research.

2) Maintenance matters.
Bad things happen if you do not lean scrubbers / prune chaeto regularly.

3) Are low nutrients always a good thing?
If your nutrients are high, then usually yes.
But you do need to be careful of over-doing it, and starving your tank.
In particular, you can get low nitrates without low phosphates, and have Cyano issues.
