Neptune Aquatics

My First Reef: Redsea 525XL

So after much pondering I think I have figured out the start of my reefing journey.

Hardware:
  • Tank : Redsea Reefer 525XL (white cabinet)
  • Light: AI Hydra 26HD x 2, Hydra 52HD x1, on HMS mount
  • Skimmer: Reef Octopus Regal 150SSS
  • Controller: Apex 2016 + breakout box
  • Return pump: Vectra L1
  • Wavemaker: Neptune WAV x 2
  • UPS for short power interruption
  • Trigger Crystal 10g ATO container
  • Bubble Magus Doser
  • Tunze 3155 ATO
  • BRS Single reactor / CBJ1200

Hardscape: Fiji + Pukani, 2" of Pink Flamingo sand

Corals:
Main focus will be soft wavy stuff. Possibly a euphyllia garden ish.

Live stocks:
  • Pair of OC clown snowflake type
  • A few pretty friendly wrasses
  • Royal gramma
  • A goby & shrimp pair (too hard to see in this big tank if they hide?)
  • Red mandarin (later)
  • Blue tang (would love to house one, but concerned about tank size)
  • Yellow tang
  • Fire fishes (one red, one purple)
  • A blenny?
  • Clam (later)

We have the spot picked out for the tank. It will be to the right of the fridge in the kitchen (where that saw is right now). I had a dedicated 20A put in that wall. We are still a few weeks away from finishing up the kitchen and then I can get going with the tank.

Ecotech /= WAV

Glad to see progress!

Editted :D,

you know what I meant. Can't have dry part sticking out of the tank so it was either WAV or Gyre. RODI just got delivered so as soon as my utility sink is plumbed in the garage I'll setup RODI and get curing with rock.

Btw, if anyone have extra dry pukani I'll buy it off you.

Hmmm, I would possibly go with a smaller type of tang for a tank that's less than 5 feet long. Certain bristle toothed ones typically don't grow as large.

Like Tomini? I considered those but I want to get more vibrant colors. Something I can spot in the tank from 20 ft away would be a good criteria :D

Sure, I don't see why you can't add a tomini, too:)
I like your stocklists and it will work out great.
Three fish that I think should be in most aquarium are clown, yellow and blue tangs. Looking forward to the FTS.

I like the perpendicular setup better. Will allow you to expand to the 5 Hydra 26s you are going to need for the eventual SPS addiction!

Having used a number of different pumps, I like the gyre the best, especially if the tank is not a wall of rock. The movement will reach the entire inside, and as I think you saw at my party, I added a jabeo at the other end to add more random movement. I am really enjoying my 525xl and you will too. P.S. I just saw that a company has made a "Y" diverter for the water re-entering the aquarium. I think they want 25.00. Call me if your interested, and I'll give you the web site. I'll probably get one shortly. I don't like hose nossle(sp) effect.
