Rons 100G tank journal

First I want to thank Susan for the great deal on the tank that started this all!

The tank is only days away from water and beginning a cycle,
Details on the journey to date.

100G tank from Susan Ingram,
I went to work and designed and fabricated a 2X2 square steel tube stand and skinned it in 3/4" maple plywood
20 Gal sump built form a 20 long tank
Red Sea RL 90 LED lighting (2) (may add a third once I measure PAR to support SPS )
2 MP40QD's and DC return pump
dual overflows into sump
titanium heater
simplicity 240DC skimmer
180 lbs of oohlite aragonite sand for DSB, with a 1" top layer of 1-2 mm aragonite
100 lbs of dry rock glued, pinned, and attached to 2 3/4" stands which were siliconed to the bottom of the tank prior to adding sand
I will place the remaining small rubble of rock in the sump / fuge for additional surface and a pod propogation area

I will fabricate the light mounts in the next few days

photos will be posted in a few days once water is in and lights are mounted.

Light mount built, not painted / sealed yet and a quick test of lights, almost time !!

Lights and “canopy” done cycle nearly finished Dr Tim’s one and only, with 40 lbs of live sand rocks, ammonia has peaked and dropped to less than .15, nitrites are dropping daily and at 2.06 today!

It’s 3/4” angle frame plastidipped, then skinned with black abs ,a few clean up items ( paint the hooks) that it hangs it on the frame and trim the ends of the front snd back pieces to match up with he ends better ( left it just a touch long for trial fitting )

Why I wanted small gaps at bottom, I wanted to reduce evaporation but maintain plenty of air flow across the water surface, both to prevent heat and maintain oxygenation of the water. With the sloped sides and condensation that builds will run to bottom then drip back into tank :)

Thanks great looking design.

Yay ! Nitrites continue to drop 1.77 and ammonia 0 , this is officially day 6 of the cycle ,, and the evaporation rate with canopy has decreased by 70% :) in the first 24 hours

72 hours, and I just topped off sump, added a whopping quart of water:). Also experimented with noise on return, a small addition to stockman standpipe and now nearly silent, ( 1” drains, with 11/4 stockman, would occasionally get a gurgle of air , I cut a an 8 slot 1.5 “ deep weir on a 2 pieces of 2” pvc and dropped it over my stockmans and BAM,,, near complete silence, I did have to slow return pump 1 speed to keep sump and tank level where it has been happily running

Added a few softies, green hairy mushroom, green star polyps, and a couple Zoas, Wife wanted a few fish of course so 3 cardinals are now schooling around the tank, skimmer is on, water stable and CUC will be added in a day or twol

Far from done I now have a few Zoas, a birds nest, green hairy mushroom, green toadstool , GSP, Xenia, clowns, blue tang, beginnings of CUC, Nassarius, ceriths, cleaner shrimp, emerald crab, pods, I now have some life to enjoy:)
Ammonia 0
Nitrites 0
Nitrates 2.2
Phosphate .13
Calcium 475
Alk 9.2
Ph 8.2

Update - at 2 months post cycle I have stable water parameters, dosing 6ml / day of 2 part and occasionally a little mg, salinity and ph rock solid at 1.025 and 8.6 at end of day 8.4 each morning keeping nitrates between 2 -4 phos at .04-.05, ca 475-490 and Alk at 8.5-8.6
Coralline growing everywhere, birds nest growing branches like crazy, zoas, mushrooms, Ricordia, star polyps, hammer, frog spawn, toadstool all doing great, pods are everywhere in rocks both Dt and sump

Quick update via pics ! Everything is growing and seems happy
