Alright, giving this another go!

Started the hobby back around 2004/05 when LEDs were still being developed. Went to college and put the hobby on a pause.

Fast forward to 2016, after college, and got the itch again and attended my first BAR swap at Chabot college. Through the years, many ups and downs, but more recently with a recent house purchase and wedding, the hobby was on the back burner.

Tank was surviving, but not thriving… lost a lot of corals.

Now that life has settled down a bit, I’m jumping back into the hobby.

Finally got my water parameters in check after multiple water changes. (high nitrates, high phosphates, low alk and low Ca).

Took advantage of AC’s Columbus Day sale and picked up some chalices and an acan to test the tank.

Equipment:
- im25 lagoon
- Kessil A360x tuna blue
- Apex classic
- Tunze 5017 ATO

Livestock:
- Pair of blue clowns
- yellow watchman goby
- royal gramma

- rainbow RBTA
- Sunkist bounce
- bleached OG bounce
- struggling jawbreaker

New corals:
Unsure of names, but space invader chalice on far right.

Hoping to have the tank in tip top shape and get a few corals to be able attend the BAR swap in November.

Feels good to be back and looking to meet new and familiar faces.

Welcome back. Please don't let lack of corals keep you from showing up, we would love to have you there.

If you need corals for the swap, let me know. I can give you some so you can participate and stock up your tank. Before the last swap I attended, my last swap was at Chabot College. Welcome back!

Welcome. Starting a journal is an excellent first step. Looks like you got your ALK and CA in order, but I would also check on MG, depending on the salt you are using. At least in the beginning. Also happy to donate corals so you can (actively) attend the swap.

Thank you everyone for the warm welcome and @boun11 and @Alexander1312 for the offers! I’d be glad to accept and really appreciate the kindness!

Really grateful for the generosity and supportive spirit of the BAR community! For anyone on the fence about become a supporting member, this is a small but huuge example of the many wonderful offerings that come with being part of this community!

Testing from a couple days ago:

Ph: 8.2
Salinity: 1.024
Alk: 5.9
Ca: 360
Mg: 1256
Phos: 0.4
Nitrate: 3

Going to be doing another water change to bring up alk and mg.

Lowered the amount of feeding to reduce uneaten food, especially with flakes cause the phos spike.

Hoping to stop running GFO. Learned from an employee at Neptune, that GFO affects alk as well.

5 gallon water changed over the past weekend, removed GFO, and tested water yesterday.

Salinity: 1.025
Alk: 4.9
Ca: 327
Mg: 1384
Phos: 0.3
Nitrate: 6

Interesting that my alk keeps dropping. Currently not dosing anything and relying only on water changes. Need to start looking into dosing

You definitely wanna bring Alk up to at least 7dKH. I would fix that with soda ash (or similar product) manually. Just go slowly to not shock anything. I've raised mine by 0.5dKH/day without any problems.

I ended up getting Red Sea foundation A and B today. Figured since Ca was on the low side, I should dose both to bring them to the desired level.

Late post:

Had a blast at the BAR swap. Wish I came a little earlier/stayed a little later to hit up Neptunes, but wife wasn’t too amused. At least she picked out something she liked from the free table lol. Thank you everyone that brought corals to the swap! And special shout out to @boun11 for graciously donating corals for me to participate.

Little update on the tank:

All corals are doing well since the swap. All corals were dipped in Coral Revive prior to putting them in. Clownfish has been an a$$ and has started knocking corals off rocks.

Rearrange the rock work and used rubble to wedge corals to the structure. So far so good.

Lost my YWG while corals from the swap were being acclimated. Couldn’t find it for a couple days. Eventually found its body partially shredded in the return nozzles. Fella must’ve jumped out when I had the cover off.

Latest test results:

Alk: 6.0
Ca: 347
Mg: 1424
Phos: 0.3
Ammonia: 0.1
Nitrate: 0
Nitrite: 5

^^ hoping the nitrite is a typo. Or it could from the YWG decaying in the back chambers. Water was tested at Neptunes before finding it dead in the nozzle.

Still manually dosing Red Sea A and B, but slowly at 2-3ml per day.

Seeing some brown on the sandbed only when lights are on after a few hours, hoping I’m not dealing with dinos..
