I had a similar situation due to wide trim on a short tank, but I was able to move the magnet with the float switch higher and use some plastic strips to shim it so it was straight. Worked fine.

FYI - The 3155 alarm can be easily adjusted with the jumpers in the control box for three options: no alarm or only sound for too high or for too low. I could not handle all the alarms on multiple tanks going off in my classroom all the time, especially on small tanks with a large surface area...

You could also consider phyto + brine shrimp. I had students set up little nannochloropsis and shrimp ecosystems at their homes during distance learning and at least three are still going - since March 2021. Pods would be awesome and entertaining for kids!

Sounds like a good plan. You could have some interesting inverts in there like crabs or shrimp. In that size of a tank, you might be able to see them more often, too!
