Andrew's Red Sea Reefer 250

A while back, my Kamoer doser started leaking and dumped kalk all over my controller cabinet (yay). The tubing inside the head unit had ruptured and started to leak. This may have actually been my fault, because when I replaced the tubing last time, the OD seemed slightly larger than the old tubing. I'm guessing this put more pressure on the tubing causing it to fail after just a few months. When that happened I moved the Kalk to an empty channel on my Red Sea doser. This wasn't ideal, this unit isn't designed to dose large quantities so frequently.

Today I fixed the Kamoer and replaced all of the tubing in the Red Sea. I've had the same tubing in the Red Sea unit for years now and figure it's time to replace to avoid failure.

I found what I think is the right size for the Kamoer (2mm ID x 4mm OD):

I bought 4x replacement tubing from Red Sea, to make sure the size is right:

Recalibrated both units. Hopefully no more leaks...

I've also recently noticed some heads of frogspawn losing color. I'm trying to target feed them to see if they recover:

Tank Update
  • The hammer was getting pretty big and growing into the glass, so I had to prune it. I was able to rehome a bunch of pieces through DBTC and LFS trade in. Clowns are mad at me.
  • Added a really cool splatter frammer from @Krustykrab (thx again!)
  • Added an indo gold torch from CFM. Also picked up a mushroom cage (from @Srt4eric ?) at the BAR table. Didn't know I needed this!
  • Kermit the Frog acro started to RTN on one branch. I cut it off, hoping it won't return. Other Acros seem to be doing well, so not sure what is going on. Maybe it's time for an ICP test?
  • Fragged some zoas to share (Utter Chaos, Fire and Ice, Mandarin)

Added a seeded Polyp Lab block from @Invictus to diversify the microbiome. Hopefully I can eventually collect one from each of the donors. I sandwiched it in between some fresh blocks. You can also see my sump is covered in white fan worms:

Added some new coral from CFM. Tried a couple things to improve my picture taking quality (iPhone 15 + orange filter): 1. Turned all flow off and 2. put the frags on a clean frag rack right up on the front glass. I think this helped.

Just picked up this tiny 2" yellow wrasse. It's currently in observational QT for a few weeks. It's filling its belly with pods in the macro tank (no other fish, there are a ton) and seems pretty healthy so far. I'm also feeding it flakes, roe and reef frenzy.

I used to have one, but it jumped out through a feeding hole in my lid! Was a bummer because it was my favorite fish. I thus needed a better lid...

I decided to DIY my own from a window screen kit ($20):

Also picked up some 1/4" black netting from BRS for $13:

I used a hacksaw and dremel to cut various pieces to length, and create a really snug fitting lid:

Used a dremel to cut off the corners at 45 degrees. I glued on these plastic tabs, so it sits flush with the top of the glass:

For the other side, I glued another piece of screen rail and notched out spaces for the light brackets:

I'm really happy with how it turned out. Hopefully this will keep my fish off the floor!!

I got splashed the other night from about 4 feet away with a ton of water cause of my yellow wrasse being an idiot. Glad you have a good net now! They grow really fast too, mine has doubled in size over about 3 months.

Haha, crazy! Ya this fish showed me my definition of "tight fitting" lid wasn't quite right... I don't think it can fit through this one. Come to think, 90% of all fish I've ever lost have been jumpers. About time I got a proper fitting top.

I took the wrasse out of QT... let's just say things did not go well. The pair of talbot damsels immediately began chasing the little wrasse all over the tank, non-stop!! I really should have seen this coming. These two jerks attack new frag plugs lol. I was miraculously able to catch her (with a net and fast hand) and move her into an acclimation box.

It's like the holiday inn with a queen size (sand) bed:

Hopefully the damsels will chill, and I can let her out soon...

About 5 weeks ago, I started dosing CH Forbidden Elixir at 2 drops per day.

I'm going to try 3 drops per day and test again in another month or so. If this doesn't work, I may just give up and do Tritons subscription service which sends you a tailored dosing solution every month.

What size tank?

I've been doing 5 drops elixr for 5 months. On my 40 gallon sps tank. Before I had no red or yellow coming through. Now it's like every color of the rainbow in the tank.

I a have icp test I need to send in. Just been to lazy and forgetful to do it.

Total water volume is ~65g, but probably closer to 55g subtracting rock/sand. Sounds like upping the dosage makes sense. I've actually noticed better coloration already!

Yea I can't say if I'm doing to much without a follow up icp test. I did that first one saw they were crazy low started the elixr and haven't tested again since then. Maybe one day soon I'll send in another one.

Do you do it manually every day? I'm considering diluting it and putting it in a doser.

Yea, I hand dose mean it's only 5 drops. I do it when feeding fish.

I don't trust a doser with actual drops. Maybe me being overly cautious. one mistake and it dumps half the bottle than crap goes south. Plus just to prime a dosing line would take 1/3 of the bottle lol.

I was thinking of diluting it with RODI 20:1. Then 1ml (diluted) = 1 drop (un-diluted). A lot more room for error that way…
