Brightwell Magnesium Question

I just ordered Magnesion-P from Brightwell. I read the warning "Caution: Contents get very hot when added to water." I mixed 2.5g with 16oz of water (per the instructions) and the solution did not get hot, or even warm! I'm worried this is a fake product (ordered from Amazon). Does anyone have experience with this product? I'm assuming if it doesn't get hot, it's not what it's supposed to be? I don't want to risk adding an unknown substance into my tank.

Only the very bottom of the container gets hot/ warm if you add a lot to water. If you’re only adding a scoop or two then no. It won’t get hot/warm cuz the chemical reaction is super diluted.
Just use it and check your mag. I’m sure it’s real.

Thanks. Do you know if it is safe to mix a more saturated solution? To raise my Mg by 40ppm, it’s suggesting I mix in 2g of water, which seems like a lot.

I use Randy’s diy mag recipe. I always notice over the years that there’s always some left over no matter how much I mix. ( I use a Powerhead to mix) I have mixed it for hours and hours. Then I dose with a dose pump. Then I just add more water. Honestly it doesn’t matter how much you mix of anything. Water will only hold so much solution. You never know how much. I just keep checking until I reach my mag number. On the BRS site ( mixing calculator) it tells you how much to add in a day.
The interwebs will tell you that you can add a lot of mag all at once. I did that back in the day. Not a good idea if you have sensitive sps. Everything I dose now. I use a doser. Slow and steady over days and weeks. Minor changes.

I use it since I got a ton cheap but will be moving away from it since it leaves a brown precipitate/scum. It definitely gets warm and you need to have good water motion or it creates a brick on the bottom. Mixing 20g in 8fl oz like the instructions say.

Interesting, my packaging says to mix 2.5g in 16fl oz of water. Maybe that's why it doesn't get noticeably warm?

Mag solutions i have personally found using esv and the premixed version of brightwell you show takes a heck of alot more to increase mag levels than the options for calcium and alk.

Meaning a gallon of alk and calc 2 part last me forever, mag on the other hand a gallon seems like goes 10 times faster.

It would say add 1400 mil for mag.

Saying all that to say follow the Calcaulator of course and mix accordingly to instructions. If you need to mix less there should be a way to determine how much to mix often need a digtal kitchen scale to get it precise.

Don't be shocked by the amount of mag it tells you to use lol. I was shocked first few times comparing it to how much alk and cal.I needed to use.

I've been going through a lot of premixed Kent Mg. It was getting kinda expensive lol. Hoping this is a cheaper substitute.

The old way was a 5:3 ratio of MgCl to MgSO4 when using two part and is super cheap to make on your own. It is hygroscopic so you'll want a tight fitting container.

Oh also if you look at the advanced instructions, I was making a stock solution which is highly concentrated.

I mixed a more concentrated batch (20g to 16oz of water) and it got pretty warm. It's exothermic, so probably not fake.

If I had any brains I would have decanted prior to filing my reservoir. But at least the draw tubing doesn't go to the bottom in mine.
