Challenges in removing chloramine in RODI setup

timestamp 1:06:00

Just found this on my drive to work today. Part 1 and Part 2 have amazing information. Might be one of my favorite speakers now. Highly recommended watching both episodes multiple times.
Dong's statements are popular in our club, probably second after the 'famous' RHF. I like that Dong has aquariums (and I heard that RHF also started one now...). I do not like the audio quality in most of his videos.

Now my confusion though with Dong's recommendation is that he wants to put the Vitamin C in the freshly produced RODI. From what I understand, and as stated above, the main concern with chloramine is the impact on the membrane but more visibly/directly impacting the DI, which apparantly leads to very (!) rapid depletion. So while it fixes the concern of potentially having residiual chloramine in the water, it is by no means the solution to the problem of producing RODI cost-efficent when your source water contains chloramine.

I honestly dont think there is any "cost effective" anything in this hobby. Just as far as you want to take it unfortunately.

I was looking for a cost efficiency when it comes to RODI. The point I am trying to make that this is not the solution to getting decent milage out of the filtration media.
I can understand that for sure...im just convinced that in this hobby the words cost efficiency is completely out the window. The hunt for it is always on our minds though. Mine to, if we were to find a way I would be following suite any which I could to help drive any costs down.

There are still smart decisions to be made. Having your DI removing your chloramine is not one of them, in my opinion.

Thought about digging a well ? Chloramine free no added water bill…Common around here to have a well for outdoor irrigation which plants/lawns thrive better on.. Have water tested annually for metals & bacteria but still need it to run through an rodi to possibly get rid of heavy metals if so which will burn resins a bit more.. There are plenty of reefers and households who rely on well water maybe a few BAR members as well

That is going too far haha

How about a large water reservoir you treat with vitamin c, then use a pressurized pump to pump water from that reservoir to your RO/DI. This is probably going to far as well.

Reality is (hopfully), that this was a false alarm, and that the catalytic carbon does its job. DI is not used up a lot at all, so there is no impact, the only thing I am unclear about is if there could be an issue with the two membranes.

Sorry if this was already mentioned but what about just using 2 of the BRS universal chloramine-rated carbon filters before your RO membrane(s)? I’ve been doing that for many years with very long longevity of my membranes. Multiple times longer than the average reefer stays in the hobby. We are probably on the same water @Alexander1312

Have your considered using a chloramine monster in your setup?

@JVU - are you using two of these?
