Clam trouble

I woke up this morning to see my clam has receeding into it's shell. The shell is still partly open so it's not like I just scared it or it was hiding. I can still see tissue of the "skrit" part but it's all inside the shell. I didn't take a pic, but I am wondering if thaat is what they look like as they die?

Not sure what could have caused this, the only thing around the clam are a bunch of acan lords, but they have been around the clam for months without issue.

any advice on when I should consider removing it as to not start a crashing cycle.

Tough one. I'd say once there is any flapping mantle flesh diconnected from the shell it's all over.
ps. Mr. Purple clam is still around.

the mantle wasn't disconnected this morning, at least it didn't look like it. It just was withdrawn inside the shell

Give it the day then worry if it's still inside Mine would do that every so often.

check to see if there are any of those tiny parasitic snails where the mantle and shell connect.

clam is DEAD, I came home from work and the tangs have pretty much polished off the tissue..........
