We purchased the VIP tickets and will be attending Friday for sure
So is there any benefit to the VIP package aside from early Friday access? (And, I guess, what is the benefit of early access aside from getting to check the venue/booth setups out early?)

I would assume you get to buy stuff on Friday otherwise it wouldn't be worthwhile for the vendors.

VIP gets you access to Friday night and Saturday. Yes you can buy corals Friday night, that's the whole point of VIP access to be able to purchase before the general public on Saturday.
