FRAG TANK IDEA=QUARANTINE TANK IDEA= MASSIVE CORAL DIE OFF (no idea)

Well let me start off by saying "I messed up big time". Weds evening I got this frag tank Idea going , I set up a 20l and added my tank water ,a pair of maxijets 400 (one each on opposite sides , eggcrate for frags , heater, and a sunpod 70watt mh on part of the tank / 2 t5's over the rest. Filtration was a carbon reactor and weekly water changes (sounds good so far ) .

On friday afternoon I noticed my blue hawkins looked a little brown in a couple of spots . So I could'nt tell if it was from recent fragging or possible moving it from a partially shaded area, anyhow I got a great idea.....since I had a frag tank set up and the parameters were almost exact to display tank parameters , I will dip in REVIVE and put all my acro frags that I had on racks into the frag tank. after dipping appx 25 minutes (maybe that was more like soaking than dipping) I could'nt see anything ressembling pests in the bucket other than pods, sediment, astrina star fish. Then I thought since alot of my acro colonies are starting to touch and I need to move some around ....I know ...I'll put them into frag tank as well and start reattaching them as I want them to be on saturday. You know instead of just superglue maybe using putty and thinning out the herd of corals by only putting in what I want and trading/selling that ones that no longer appealed to me. Well later that night my worst nightmare took place.

Roughly 6 hours later I went into my garage (where I set up the frag tank) and once the smell of acro death hit my nose.....I new what that meant....Looked into frag tank and it was all milky and hard to see anything through it....CRAP , started siphoning water out (5 gallons ) and replace with nsw, noticed alot of my frags had turned completely white (dead), checked parameters again all seemed fine, changed out carbon and hoped for the best. I did'nt put corals back into main display because they where all sliming and did not what to have same effect in display tank.

Saturday morning I checked tank, still coudy , more coral die off , did another water change and changed out carbon. Repeated this procedure again sat evening and tank appeared to be getting a little clearer, I also changed the two maxijets out with two tunze 6045's , much better flow.

Today after church services I did notice tank was looking pretty clear but I did another water/carbon change. The remaining corals seem to be stabilizing, I cut a few more dead spots off the remaining corals hoping the rest will continue to survive.

Jeeez this weekend sucked for me. Oh and I never did find any pest on the corals >:(

On the bright side I still have the display tank doing fine and a crap load on montis , chalices in it to put onto bare spots. I don't know why this backfired on me, maybe dipped too long ? too many corals sliming in a small set up? corals did not like the move ?

Live and learn I suppose, Don't know which corals/mini colonies passed away and not sure if the remaining ones will all make it but at this point i'm leaving them in the now QUARANTINE TANK until they show signs of improvement.

So far I know for sure I lost my

HAWKINS
SUHARSONIO (DEEP WATER)
TEAL GOMESI
GREEN TIPPED TENIUS
LORIPES
VALIDA
MIYAGI TORT
OREGON TORT
BALI TRICOLOR
GARF BONSAI
C-AQUARIUM UNKNOWN
LOKANIS
CRAP LOAD OF OTHERS I CAN'T THINK OF RIGHT NOW
RASPBERRY LEMONADE NASUTA
PINK LEMONADE

I will post some pics of what the frag tank looks like and display as well, did'nt take picks of the dead ones (never really wanted to have that as a reminder since the death scene is permanantly etched into my brain) a liitle later.

Sergio I wonder if it wasn't an issue with cycling in the new frag tank. Since the frag tank is pretty much devoid of rock, the egg-crate and tank walls now become a MAJORITY of the surface area in the tank, so if you just tossed water in there, even if it was from your new tank, all those bacterial loads need to recolonize all the surfaces.

Thank you Jay

Mike , sounds like could have been the problem.

Here are picks of the aftermath (lots of frags and colonies have already been tossed out )

Sorry about your loss. I can hook you up with frags of the following Le Bali tricolor, oregon tort, and C-aquarium unknown to replace your lost frags.

Greatly appreciated Dudley, I am still trying to decide if leaving the existing corals in the frag/quarantine set up until they look less stressed or risk bringing them back over to display ....stressing them even more trying to reattach to rock work. I will pm you later on to see if i can meet up with you and take you up on such a Genorous offer.

Hm, I don't see anything in your tank but frags and the sort -maybe you can take a piece of live rock from your display, or your refugium, and place it into your frag tank to provide biological filtration?
Hopefully everything bounces back!

Lets rule out the things that don't help ROCKSTAR (I like saying that name) , I tried cursing, jumping up and down (while shaking a fist), and closing my eyes while clicking my heels (no ruby red shoes ) hoping the CORAL FAIRY would come make things all better (hmmmmm....that sounds like TUBERIDER :D ) , I was almost tempted to say a prayer at service today but opted not to....there are a whole lot more things worthy of that, besides I'll be up and growing more sps before you know it. Just another lesson in life that will make me a little wiser next time (at least I hope wiser).

Thanks for your concern Steve

I thought about it (obviously the thought came afterwards :( ) but Originally I wanted more space and not rock, however as Mike pointed out ....there is nothing in it to help cycle. I kept seeing a mental picture of quarantine tanks without lr in case you add medications but maybe thats for fish only.

I think the 25min revive dipping stress out your frags -- just like what happened to my frags I got from a swap.

I can hook u up with hawkin, c-aquarium unknown, valida that I just got from you and what ever corals I have in my tank, except for some corals that still too small to frag. Just lit me know when you frag tank is ready again.

I use sponge filters for QT'ing fish :), and maybe a small hunk of live rock normally.
I've never had a frag tank set up for corals, but I've seen some people elevate a sheet of egg crate and place live rock below it, in addition to a power head to keep water moving through the rocks. And if there is a sump, the live rock is thrown into a chamber in the sump.

Thanks Perry , I am really awe strucked by everyones Generosity, Its really nice to have a great reefing family (unlike my own family were my son is always telling me how much better his nano is than mine >:( ) , actually my wife of all people showed sadness that I lost alot of corals .......or could she just be that good of an actress ???.

Sergio,
On a more positive note, we saw the movie "Fireproof" last night and our couples group has been doing a great Sunday study about it. An awesome movie about love and marriage. Check it out, if you haven't. Of course, watch it with da wife.

Sergio, where did you get this tank from?

If this tank was picked up from someone else I can only think it was perhaps used at some point with copper.

dang, sorry to hear that Sergio. I had the same issue with over dipping. I went o LA once and bought a whole lots of colonies. When i got home, i dipped all of them too long and lost over half.

Come down and hook you up with:

Blue Tipped tenius
Green TIPPED TENIUS
MIYAGI TORT
Steve elias
C-AQUARIUM UNKNOWN
RASPBERRY LEMONADE NASUTA
Deep water acro.
AquaDelight
and what ever you like..

Sergio, I got the RASPBERRY LEMONADE NASUTA from you from DBTC. As per the most important rule imo, you get it back :) Let me know if you'll be at the next BOD and I'll bring the frag with me :)

Sorry to hear your loss Sergio. I wish I had gotten some of your corals so that I could give them back to you, but I am glad other club members have.

Thanks Ed , I will pm you later.

Tony, Ed has offered a frag of this one to me already :) so I would ask that you continue to grow yours out and continue the DBTC , Thanks a bunch though.

Jonathon, no worries as much as I was able to put into the DBTC program.....fellow reefers have come forth to restock my losses with corals of what I lost :) . Again I am at a loss twice this weekend , First when I saw my death tank in full glory......and secondly today with the amount of caring and giving Individuals. I will sleep comfortably tonight (well after checking on frag tank a few more times into the night) knowing my losses will not be permanant.
