Good Mechanic?

Hey Guys,

I have an 05 Dodge Ram that needs some maintenance. Started with brakes, but I'm thinkin I need to flush/replace the tranny fluid too. Brakes I can do, tranny fluid I rather would not (mess, no garage) so I was seein if anybody new a good mechanic or shop that they trust and does things right? I use to have a hook up at the dealer but Capital Dodge has closed. Any help would be appreciated.

transmission fluid change isn't too hard. you could probably get Jiffy Lube to do the change. It's very similar to changing oil. Find the right drain plug, drain it out. The hard part is then you should flush it clean by running transmission fluid through it for a bit, then loading it back up. Either way, not saying you should do it, but most Jiffy Lube like places can do it with little risk.

Isn't Jiffy Lube the place that pretends to change your oil, then tells you you need new muffler bearings and hi-beam fluid?

sorry but I could never trust a car to a Jiffy Lube or any "speedy" place. i've heard way to many horror stories about employees forgetting to put your cap back on, forgetting to fill the oil up period, o too much, or too little, engines seizing. I can do the simple drain but was looking for somewhere to drop the pan and get out all the gunk. I do a lot of towing and 4wd in the snow so I wanna keep it well maintained.

sorry, I think you're right about that.

I know a decent guy in Albany, but not sure where you're located.

The Ram from what I understand does not have a drain plug on the pan. You have to just drop the pan to drain it. You then fill it through the fill spout on the top of the transmission until it is full. You could run it through all the gears and then drain it again and refill to flush out the system. It is not hard to do, it just gets messy.

thanks Brian. from the Dodge forums that's what I gather as well. that's why I'm asking if anybody knows a good mechanic because I do not want to drop the pan at home, no garage and too messy.

maybe i should ask, where do you take your car/truck for maintenance/repair?

if your not to far from Morgan Hill, there is a great mechanic that I have gone to since high school. completely trustworthy, does a great job, and is pretty middle of the road as far as price goes.

I do all of my own maintenance and repairs on my own vehicles. I am a mechanic. I work at Walnut Creek VW. I would be more then willing to help you, but I currently don't have a garage. "In-laws moved in with us and took over the garage"

Lord Helmet - what's their contact info? I'm willing to drive if I know the guy take care of my Dodge right, especially at a fair price.

Tumbleweed - should I pull a favor from a friend with a garage? haha...hey John, can i borrow your garage? for what? um, change some fluids? hahaha

sfboarders - been checkin yelp but at the same time they could be written by folks that don't know much about cars. also doesn't yelp practice a form of extortion by tellin business to pay or they'll leave up negative comments?

The smell of tranny fluid has got to be one of the worst things I have ever smelled. My brother and I flushed the tranny on his old Chevy POS and that was the only smell in my life to make me gag.

Have you smelled gear oil? That's worse.

@VietNR1, I'm sure most of the people who post on Yelp dunno anything about cars. I haven't heard anything about extortion's. That's new to me.

Dumped a pan full of tranny oil on myself while working on a C4 one time. Washed my hair with Lava soap twice to get the oil out :D

Yah, gear oil smells worse.

Yea, yelps pretty dirty....my friend owns the Lee's Sandwiches on Santa Clara in San Jose and he got a call from Yelp saying, "hey, for a fee, we can remove all your negative comments" or something along those lines. I'll dig up the email he sent out to all our friends and give you the full story...and here it is.

Hi All,

After noticing that some good reviews were being deleted from our business’s account on Yelp, we started to do some research on why Yelp does this. We found out that you have to pay Yelp to keep good reviews on their site!

Here are some articles that we’ve been reading about Yelp.com and their authenticity. We use to like using Yelp.com a lot because we thought their reviews were useful, but now found out that Yelp is FAKE!

They can be bought and businesses can pay them to just list good reviews. This is good for businesses, but bad for consumers because consumers that rely on these reviews will most likely only see the good reviews.

So any business owner can PAY Yelp not to put bad reviews on their website.

I think that's called EXTORTION!
