loud Powerhead???

So I got some used K4's this weekend, and they seem to be working great in terms of flow, however one of them is outting out a loud hummm, and since my tank is in the living room it's getting kinda annoying. I have unpluged it several times and fiddled with the impellar and the houseing, it will turn back on and be fine, but after 2-10 mins it's humming again. Any ideas about how to fix this?

I thought that only happened on new powerheads? Well it is running, as annoying the the noise is, my tank needed the extra flow

is it the powerhead or a localized vibration (like a rock vibrating against the glass in close proximity to the pump)

It's the powerhead, none of my rockwork actualy touch my tank, I'm not sure if I am just getting used to it, or it's going away (been sitting next to the tank for several hours) but it is diffently louder then any of the other powerheads (2 k3's and another k4) in the tank.

Do K4's have little clear "bump ons" between the glass and the mounts? If my Tunze's are missing those the create quite a racket.

Never mind then :) Those should isolate it just fine. Sounds like an imbalanced impeller or impeller based, like Tony suggested.

Ive had my korallias give what sounded like powerhead noise. It turned out to be vibration of one of my rocks on the back wall. It was east to check by running the pump decoupled from the wall.

In my tank I get friggen snails that like to hang out right by the PH's and rattle against the glass or rock work. Drives me nuts!!

I will try to swap out the impellars tonight and see if it makes a difference. Just to be claer it's not a rattling, or bumping sound, it's a low hum simalar to a loud computer fan noise.

Kinda like Hummmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm only louder and more annoying....rofl

That's what bad impeller will do. They spin kinda fast so the rattling turns into a hum. Slow it down and the hum will turn more into a rattle ;)

So say it's a bad impellar, what are my options? Can I buy just an impellar for a K4, or do I need to learn to live or disconnect it?

Well check the impeller well first. If it's budging at all or has "burrs" replacing the impeller may not solve anything. I'd try swapping like you suggested and go from there. There isn't much that can go wrong with PH's truly as there is only 1 moving part :) Most problems revolve around that part.

I noticed that the impellar on this k4 is missing the small plastic piece that goes over the gray gear looking piece on the bottom, now that I think about it that most likely the issue, but I guess as you guys said, testing it is really the way to find out.

I will do that tonight.

I wish I knew what part you where talking about but I've never owned any of those pumps :( Good eye though, hopefully it's must that :)

I have had problems with Korillias running in reverse direction and making a very loud sound. It was a matter of me stopping the propeller and getting it to run in the right direction and the noise was gone.

Well the good news is that a new implellar (if that is the issue) is only like 9.00

The part is the bottom piece of white plastic shown here

How do you determine the direction they will spin?
