Neptune Apex DB8 went out with less than a years of use...anyone else experience this?

Fun story from back in the old days.

We had some systems built in China. Normal, carefully specified all the electronic components.
First units were great.
Next units ... not so much.
They came with a little note: We are out of these caps you specified, so we are replacing them with these high quality equivalent ones.
If you want what you specified, it will be several extra weeks, but trust us, these are the same.
They were not, but it was really hard to tell.

Turns out this is a pretty common scam.
They quietly replace some components with cheaper ones as you start volume orders.
Often with some partner company that supplies the components which makes it even murkier.
Sometimes without notice, but usually with a quiet little note, so it is not outright fraud.
Then they pocket the difference, greatly increasing their margins.
