New to the hobby

Hey there!

I’m new to reefing, but stumbled across BAR while researching all the various things to learn about this hobby. I am planning a relatively small system, probably in the 20–30 gallon range for the display. I’m leaning away from an AIO because I want a setup with some room for add-ons, so I’m planning on a small sump. Coral keeping definitely interests me, but I’ve always been drawn to freshwater planted tanks, and recently I’ve come across pictures of display refugiums that really appeal to me, so I’ll likely include an auxiliary refugium plumbed into the sump. I anticipate I’ll enjoy the tinkering side of the hobby and I’m interested in monitoring and automation with tools like reef-pi.

Welcome @Cspencer to BAR! Also, thanks for joining up as a supporting member. Best investment in your journey. The wisdom from so many members here will get you going in the right direction. It sounds like you do not have a DT or other equipment yet. Is that correct?

If you don't have stuff yet, let me know. I may have some PIF items to get you going.

That’s right, I don’t have any equipment yet. I’ve been watching the buy/sell/trade forums here for a few days. I have my eye on a custom setup @Turkeysammich listed a little while back, but if there are items you’re looking to pass on I’d definitely be interested.

If you’re interested in that setup. I am sure @Turkeysammich can make you a great deal. Maybe you can take some live rock from the tank breakdown to jump start the tank.

Welcome - great strategy to not go AIO but look for a setup that has a proper sump. Biggest mistake I made in the beginning as a sump seemed too intimidating with all the plumbing etc.

My frag tank / 28 gallon is the only nano I know which has a sump, unless you go DIY or custom. But I might not be aware of some other models.

Let me know if you decide to not go for that custom setup. I believe that setup is ready to go. The equipment I've got (tanks and sumps) will require some extra parts and plumbing. I have most of what you would need to get started, but not quite a turn-key system.
