got ethical husbandry?

new to the scene.

Hello All,
I got into saltwater tanks about 4 months ago. We started with a 25 tall, and didnt want to spend alot and still be able to keep a fowlr tank. We now have a 29 instead of the 25, and a 90 with a 30gal? sump. The 29 has a 50w heater, 30 lbs(2 1/2-3") live sand, 30 lbs of random live rock, aqua c remora nano, koralia nano 425, koralia nano 240, an aquatop 400uv canister with ONLY filter pads in it, and for lighting a 24" dual t5 ho with a power glo in the front and a marine glo in the back. The back gets an hour and a half of indirect light through the blinds, there is double the algae on the back because of this. I run the lights from 11am to 8pm. The livestock consists of 1 purple firefish 2", 1 orchid dottyback 2", 1 yellow faced goby dude that puts in work 2", 1 black and white clown 1 1/2", 2 heads of frogspawn. for cleaners we have: 5 small turbo 1 large, 5 nass snails, 2 conical dudes, 3 scarlet hermits, 8 blue leg hermits, lots of white pods, 2 blooms of tigger pods since introduction, and happy to say...the bigger pods are in the rocks as well.

As for the 90gal. I picked up this tank used and was very lucky, even though i needed to update/replace things. The tank is an older 90gal. oceanic tech tank, single left side overflow, mag 9.5 return wide open used for flow as well, old euroreef skimmer with 590 gph pump seems to pull pretty good,
heater, 3 1/2" sand bed with chaeto and 5lb LR in fuge with 11" t5 running opposite of day lights. Livestock in 90 is: 1-14" rbta(came with tank and was pissed), 1-4"rainbowBTA, 1 blue tang 2", 1 sailfin tang 2", 2 tomatoe clown(pair), 2 blue/green chromis 1 1/2", 1 six line dbag 1 1/2", 1 tank bred nemo that should prolly go away 2", 1 very active cleaner shrimp, 2 ate the bejesus outta some aptasia peps, 1 frogspawn colony with 12 big heads(10 new starts), 1 torch with 3 heads, 1 with 4, 3 small zoa frags, 2 frogspawn frags with 3 heads.

more to come. thanks, mike

I decided that scraping the overflows exterior wasnt included in the time crunch while moving. it is covering up nicely now. water params in both tanks are solid. 0 nitrate, 8.1 ph mid-day, alk is 9-10. Im using reef crystals with RO @ 1.0245. There is also a 2" maxima in the tank, seems to be doing ok. I have a phos ban 150 reactor and a pump ready to go. im looking for input as to what i should put into that 150 reactor. any input is helpful. carbon and gfo? combos? singles? needed, not? links to years of reading?

Welcome to BAR! I giggled at the sixline "dbag". LOL!

Sounds like and looks like you have some awesome stuff. Looking forward to seeing more.

Guys with a bit more reef chemistry sense will chime in to help out with some of your questions.

I didn't see a reading for phosphate, so I'd say put gfo in that reactor and manifold it off the return pump rather than using another pump. Other than that sounds good so far. Probably start with one cup the first time and build up to 1.5-3 cups changes out about once a month would be my advice.

Thank you for the advice. I'm not testing phosphates at the moment, but would like some input as to which tests are reliable/accurate. Thanks, Mike.

Inhabitants seem happier as time goes along. Flushed the reactor, but I'm still scared to spark it up. If it ain't broke don't fix it right?
