High Tide Aquatics

Power compact question

Hi - I have an older set of custom sea life 55w x 2 retrofit power compacts. I noticed my corals reaching for light (my zoos especially), so I think it's time to change the bulbs. Question is, how big of a difference will it really make? I have a 20R, and I'm debating to get a new lighting setup altogether (T5), but thinking I might give new bulbs a try first. Secondly, if I do replace the bulbs, is there a certain brand that is better than others? Also, I'm unsure whether to get one 10k and one actinic, or if I should go with the 50/50 bulbs all the way around. I'm also going to throw in some moonlight leds, which hopefully helps with make the color of the corals pop more. Finally, it seems 55W bulbs cant be found anymore. I was told 65W would work.. but would like to get confirmation of this. Thanks guys.

55w are generally square pin, 65w are usually straight pin, most ballasts can fire both, both of which should be fairly easy to find. I like to use a 10k and an actinic, but that is mostly personal preference. I normally buy CF bulbs through hellolights.com, they have very good prices and customer service.

AH is a big favorite for DIY lighting with freshwater planted tanks. I have owned several of their kits and Kim has excellent CS ime.
