Salt Mix test results...

Hello all I've been playing around with some new salt mix.. I just mixed 2 batches of salt... Approx 50g of each..

Instant Ocean Reef Crystals

nitrite 0
nitrate 0
mag no test kit
phosphate no test kit
dkh 12
calcium 380

Seachem Reef Salt
nitrite 0
nitrate 0
Mag unknown no test kit
phophate no test kit
dkh 15
calcium 490

Do these results looks similar to what others are getting? I tested the dkh 3-4 times to make sure the results were repeatable.. I thought 15dkh is a little high.. Will it adversely affect my coral? Calcium looks pretty spot on with the seachem but low for rc...
 
IIRC, I saw 360ppm Ca on the RC that was bad. The Mg on those batches was around 1050ppm too. Alk looks normal for RC, and similar to what I get.

F&S keeps saying that the RC salt doesn't have a problem now, but people keep coming up with similar test results.

Ca on the Seachem looks typical. The alk seems high. I think I did get a similar high alk reading when a new API kit didn't get shaken well enough.
 
Hmmm I just read the advanced aquarists article and it said seachem salt uses borate which shows up on alkalinity tests but does not affect kh/ph like carbonate should.. So maybe my 15dkh is a false reading due to the borat.... Is there a way for me to check the good kh without the borate interferring with the test?
 
Hey whats' up Norman.. Shouldn't you be working on your car :) I read something about borate in the seachem salt throwing off kh tests... So hopefully its' actually pretty much in line...

I'm just going to go with it.. I have 2 buckets of rc that I'm going to hopefully find a home for.. I'll use it to cure rock or fowlr :)

I got 2 buckets of the seachem reef salt to try.. I'm not big on large corrections to the premix so we'll see if the kh depletes itself due to tank load...
 
The high borate was the old formulation, I think.

Just got back from kungfu class. Taking a short break, get some house stuff and dinner in line, then work on the car :D
 
OK you have to tell me how the hell you can read below the resolution of your test kit? Nothing reads zero...undetectable at your resolution yes, zero, no :)

Nope, always high borate as that is how they differentiate their salt from the other MANY made as the same plant sold under different names like Seachem, Kent, Oceanic, Instant Ocean and Reef Crystals :lol: Every single one is mixed by the same people using the same protocols and same mixer but different levels :D

Ok so what would explain the high dkh of 15? I tested some calibratoin solution that was sent my salifert and it tested a tad high.. The solution they sent me was 6.5 and it tested 7.2.. not off the chart high like 15... Is the dkh 15 ok to use in my tank?

I wonder if its because we mix only small parts at a time.. If I mixed the whole bucket of 160g or whatever it is I wonder if the numbers would be closer?

Yep, still have tanks :D

I'm relocating the 2x4 frag tank to another spot, and setting up a second one next to it so I don't have to crowd my frags so much.

I have Sam's old 120g that's going where the frag tank is currently. And my display tank stuff is gonna get relocated to the 120.

Haven't been DBTC'ing etc with the tanks all being in low key maintenance/recovery mode. Stuff has been doing good for a while now. What's left of it anyways.

Gonna be hitting you up for corals before the year is out :D

I've been hearing that for quite a while now.

So what's the back story on the RC salt? What was the actual cause of their problems? What's with F&S repeatedly claiming that RC was ok, but people still finding problems with newly bought salt?

Anybody I've communicated with at F&S and IO has given me evasive non-answers. If there's one thing that pisses me off more than something getting effed up, it's someone giving me BS non-answers about it. Don't make me struggle every step of the way just to find out the truth. It's that type of treatment that makes me write them off.

So what specifically happened with RC? Same plant, same mixer, same people... Different supplier? New procedure? New training? New person that didn't mix the other salts yet? Disgruntled employee? Sabotage? Al Qaida?

C'mon Gresh... spill it. I know you know!

And your post + links change what I said how? +.00001% above anyone else is still higher. I did not talk percentages nor amounts, just the fact they will ALWAYS be higher.

Some stuff is not meant for public consumption Norm ;) I've said more then I can all ready. I don't know any of that anyways.....nor does any of my contacts. You have to understand since the buy out by ML things have changed within the corporation and many can't answer your question as either they do not know, can not tell due to policy or are not allowed to discuss items that are not in their job description. CS doesn't know what is going on, nor will they ever so sending them emails or calling really won't get you to the bottom of the situation :) I don't equate my success with the salt to any CS agent nor company policy so that doesn't really effect my continued decision to use IO/RC :)

Must be Al Qaida. Next the Patriot Act will include reefers and the right for the government to search your tank with out a warrant. They'll all ready work with RC and read all your PM's :lol:

DR. F & S is the largest user/buyer of RC...about half of all produced goes to DR.F&S
 
I was merely implying that the issue had been addressed, it's not like their just chucking crap into a can. Just like you continue to use IO/RC, I'll use SC/TM big deal geesh....

read carefully....they want elevated borate levels.... they believe in elevated levels of borate... their is no issue to them with elevated borate levels ;) They requested such high levels, no ones messed up (issue) and gave them elevated levels of borate.

It has nothing o do with "chucking crap in a can" nor did I even REMOTELY IMPLY that so you can squash the dribble right out ;) Our salts are touched by all the same hands ;) You may even have some of my salt in yours since far more of mine is produced :lol:

I said "chucking stuff in a can", BECAUSE I understand it's all touched by the same hands, geesh....... I do read carefully my mom's a retired English teacher.
 
That's only an issue to you/non ML company people. ML wanted that high of levels and they got it. No issue to them, just you all ;) I have no issues with it. If it had nuclear isotopes in it I still wouldn't care as I don't use it :D They could toss gypsum in there like one of the other companies and I still wouldn't care or have an issue with it as I don't use it :p
