Steinhart Aquarists head to the Philippines

Shhhh quiet back there... geesh, the fish are always ruining the movies!!!

Nice video. Although that's one of my favorite songs - now I'll have spawning chicken feathers in my head when I hear it.

Can you Mcgyver a vacuum to gently suck up the eggs?

I figured you'd like that :) If I could spell cocinneria I would have said something about Jake as well

That's pretty awesome. It was happening in daylight too? (Never researched it, but thought coral spawning tended to be a more crepuscular activity?)

In this case with Cespitularia in this region it was quite literally the middle of the day when we first noticed it (@ 11:30am). The eggs/larvae were also negatively buoyant, which was news to me. I think it's fair to say there are a whole lot of unknowns about the way corals spawn, and they probably do so in a hugely diverse number of ways that are difficult to generalize. :D

^^^^ great question. and how's the "tidepooling"? Get the bobbit worm yet?

You guys finding many porcelain crabs? Looks like you are having a fantastic time!

Only saw ones that we can easily get in the trade, but I did think of you! It was fun to feel like Jaques Cousteau for 12 days.

Les, we did go after bobbits. Chrissy Piotrowski hunted with us and says hi. We tried MS222 on small ones and it seemed to have an effect but we couldn't get one or dig it out - they seem not to have actually burrows, but 'swim' through the sand. We got our hands on a big one, but it got away. Incredibly strong. Then we were stumped due to weather, couldn't find one on our last dive (had to go to a different spot to collect octos that night). Now we are headed home and sad we didn't get a third chance. Sad because we are confident we can do it... it may get us on the trip next year!
