UV sterilizer precipitate buildup

My buddy changed his bulb and found a huge amount of build up on the quartz sleeve. It was soft but too thick to break off by hand, so used bone cutter to gently remove. The big chunks mostly dissolved in tap water. Anyone have a guess of what is the precipitate and the cause?

Calcium build up. You’re supposed to clean the quartz tube every 6 months to a year.
I’ve built a pvc tube with an end cap. Fill the tube with either vinegar / citric acid. That’s how I clean the quartz tube.

Any chance the feeding setup was not good? It looks like salt creep, as if there was air in the UV and it was somehow evaporating.

For instance, setup horizontally, with an air bubble at the top of the bulb.

Seems highly implausible that could happen, but very weird.

Guess I should’ve given the old taste test to determine if it’s salt creep. That’s my thought since it is setup horizontally with ports at the side not at the top, gate valve is before entry and flow is pretty slow. Thinking of either increasing flow rate or place valve after the exit.

Looks a lot more like salt creep due to trapped air. If its help in by clips, remove it while the pump is running maneuver it so the exit is the high point and push the air out the clip it back in.
