Bigfish's swim into the sea - a tank journal

I completely understand, I will definitely look into getting new membranes I'm just wanting to do a water change asap so waiting on my Resin for now just to hold me down, but first thing on my list is ordering new filters/membranes!

Found out I do have membranes - although not enough "Brains" as I would like which I why I'm in the situation I am in hahaha :D

Also LC came in!

Sorry, my instructions were wrong. If the phosphate level on the tester is at max, then I believe you are supposed to dilute with fresh saltwater not RODI. That means you need clean saltwater though! This was a suggestion I have seen from Randy Holmes Farley from the R2R board in the past.

If your fresh saltwater has 0.05ppm phosphate that is a problem. Very challenging to run a reef tank with starting phosphate like that since it suggests the water you are starting with is not clean. Even if you do zero water changes, if your RODI water has phosphates then you are essentially dosing phosphates to your tank non-stop via your ATO.
Yeah it hit me that my auto top off has been sending phosphate filled RODI water this whole time for who knows how long a few weeks to months smh further contributing to my issues, hopefully I can get my system fixed and back up to Par (Lame dad joke? My son is too young to appreciate these at the moment..)

My conundrum is obviously for the time being my RODI water is compromised would you @derek_SR or anyone else still recommend I dilute to a 1:50 ratio of RODI to Phosphate-E and put it in my skimmer? I'm thinking since my concentration of phosphate is so incredibly high I might be safer just dosing directly for now until I get my water filtration good again? My resin is hopefully going to come in Thursday.

My tank is around 200 gallons with a 75 gallon sump I'm trying to figure out how much I can safely add for now. I'm not the best at Maths...

I would rather under assume the size of my tank to be safe per instructions its says to dose Tank capacity x ppm decrease desired x .25 = ml of Product to add

250 gallons (Safer) x 1.75 (just to be safe currently roughly estimated at 2.24) x .25 = 109 ml roughly total

Obviously I want to dose in really small amounts so maybe I spread that out over a month (28 days) which puts me at roughly 3.9 mls a day

First post here has a calculator:

If I were you I would not run the RODI until you get a new membrane. You are wasting the life of the DI resin as well as salt. The tank has been doing its thing for quite some time now. Waiting a few days for a new RO membrane seems advisable.

Thank you this is very helpful! Seems like I need to dose around 53 mls should I spread that out?

When dosing something new go very slow. If it says x amount maybe do 1/4th of that amount than Retest see what differenceit makes, observe results. Slowly increase up to full dose.

Rule of thumb you didn’t get high po4 over night don't attempt to drop them overnight. Verse a large swing aim for a steady decrease over time. With the ultimate goal of getting to where you can get in range and adjust dose to hold there.

Will take a few days of daily testing to get a trend understanding how much dosing decreases it everyday. Than you have information you can plan on hopefully it makes a little sense.

Only my opinion not any expert.

Thank you I’ll try this out tonight I’ll add it directly into my sump air intake and record a more accurate reading once I get my RODI set up good on Thursday

Sorry lastly forgot don't test after feeding or disturbing the tank. And try to take water samples under the surface of water as not to get any particles that may be floating on top of water.

This calculator is linked at the beginning of the guide I wrote, by the way. You could actually read that and follow the link there rather than giving R2R more traffic…just saying.
I appreciate all the hard work you put into the guide sorry forgot about it with my busy day I’ll definitely read it over again
