Electrical cost of running a reef tank in SF

Zero. The scenario flips during the "off" season, Nov. 1 to April 30. Very little price advantage between peak/off-peak. And "harvest" is low during the short days of winter. Couple that with increased consumption from the furnace blower, you get the picture.

Electrical cost of running a reef tank in SF

NET usage for the month of May was 74 kwh! Bill was MINUS $23.79, due to peak/off-peak price differential. Gawd, that makes it harder to get back to reefing.

    PV to EV

Mike, it's a lead sled. I'm hoping that when the time comes to replace the lead-acid batteries, there will be an economically feasible alternative. Charging takes "overnight". Yesterday I took the car out for about 20 miles, and consumed just under 10 kw to recharge it back to full. At 8...

    PV to EV

Range & Performance are mutually exclusive. I designed this for acceleration/speed vs range. 50 miles with a light right foot is my estimate, although I haven't had a need to travel that far yet. Usually it's just around town, 15 to 20 miles a pop. Got plenty of juice left after that. I've...

    PV to EV

Regular unleaded was $4.03 at Costco the other day, cost me $61.83 to fill up the Accord. Good thing this other car runs on electrons. Thought I'd share some pics. FILLING UP: ELECTRICITY TURNS ME ON: Interested in building one? The Electric Auto Association has a chapter near you...

    Just bought these

Nice toy, Phong. It will go through acrylic just like butteh. Years back when I announced that I'll buy a router, my wife asked, what's wrong with ours? I can connect to the internet fine. And I'm supposed to be the resident geek. ;D Jim

Electrical cost of running a reef tank in SF

Mine, too. My unit is in the garage, and the waste water line is 50' long, so I move it around shrubs, rose bushes, trees, etc, whatever needs watering. I've since bypassed the DI unit, and still make RO for drinking. I use glass gallon jars (from Trader Joe's apple cider) to store the RO...

Electrical cost of running a reef tank in SF

OT: just got my water bill, covering 3/5/08 to 5/5/08. Current usage, 15; last year, 31 (cubic yards, I think). Water changes and RO/DI to top off a 180 surely didn't help my water conservation efforts.

Electrical cost of running a reef tank in SF

That's a great price. Now I'm GREEN with envy! ;D But hey, I paid $2,000+ for an IBM-AT clone with a 20 MB harddrive. RAM was 256k, I think. Jim old fart

Electrical cost of running a reef tank in SF

I used RealGoods (www.realgoods.com). They've been in business since 1978, which is one reason I used them. Back then, your choice was a bit limited; either go with a cheaper newbie, or pay a bit more with an established company. There are lots of good vendors out there now, so approach it...

Getting obsessed with saving the planet.

Only 2.1kw. House is nestled next to a hill, I kinda maxed out on available roof space. It's gonna be interesting this month with the start of "peak season". I've never been without an aquarium since the panel installation. We've got central A/C, but we use it sparingly. I also have a...

Getting obsessed with saving the planet.

Mike, that was a good writeup you did on the other thread. The contractor that installed my system, RealGoodsdotcom, gave me a payback estimate of ~11 years using data in late 2002. From a financial standpoint, not a bad investment, considering that it also added approximately $30,000 to the...

Getting obsessed with saving the planet.

Hi Adrian, welcome to our 12 step program. ;D You just described my lifestyle. You didn't mention composting ... between recyling and the compost bin, our trash is about 3/4 kitchen bag a week. I don't go that far with water, though. Reefing makes for a big carbon footprint, unfortunately...

Electrical cost of running a reef tank in SF

I kid you not, my electricity bill for April was under $11. Total kwh was under 200, way within baseline. Ah, the joy of having no reef tank. My solar panels, by the way, went online Jan 03. Total out of pocket was ~$12,000 if memory serves me right. No regrets for making that decision...

    What's our longest chain?

Jim, the SGN frag that you gave me before you left for Tonga has grown over the years; in fact, I have two distinct stalks with healthy and beautiful branches. As you know, I'm taking a break from reefing. One stalk is going to a friend for "safekeeping". The other I'd like to put back in...

    Surprise Air Show

Last Saturday afternoon I heard the unmistakable roar of WWII era engines, (yeah, when you're an old geezer you recognize those things) so I rushed out with my camera and took some pics. B-25 Mitchell. 16 of these took off the USS Hornet, Doolittle's 30 seconds over Tokyo raid. I read the...
