PV to EV

Regular unleaded was $4.03 at Costco the other day, cost me $61.83 to fill up the Accord. Good thing this other car runs on electrons. Thought I'd share some pics.

Range & Performance are mutually exclusive. I designed this for acceleration/speed vs range. 50 miles with a light right foot is my estimate, although I haven't had a need to travel that far yet. Usually it's just around town, 15 to 20 miles a pop. Got plenty of juice left after that. I've got an ammeter on the pillar and can actually watch it suck amps when pedal is against metal. Easy driving will extend range dramatically.

That is a cool car jim. I don't know why the car industry is taking too long to make one. How long does it take to fully charge your EV? Are you selling it. ;D

The car industry did make one, then they destroyed them :D

Actually they've made a couple, EV-1 by GM, Toyota made an all electric RAV4. Are the two that come to my mind most often.

Jim, I'm guessing you went with Lead-Acid batteries? Seem to recall a story about one of the oil companies buying up a major developer/maker of NiMH batteries, but now they won't sell to anyone unless the order is huge.

I need something that can go at least 150 miles. 200 is better.
There is one that can go that far but cost over 100K ;D ..

about 120 miles round trip.... 30 is for the time I'm stuck in traffic ;D ..

Well if it's all electric being stuck in traffic doesn't count because you don't use energy that way! :D Well unless you have your A/C blasting.

Mike, it's a lead sled. I'm hoping that when the time comes to replace the lead-acid batteries, there will be an economically feasible alternative.

Charging takes "overnight". Yesterday I took the car out for about 20 miles, and consumed just under 10 kw to recharge it back to full. At 8 cents a kw hour (my rate, because of PV net metering) the drive cost me under a dollar. It would have been at least a gallon of gas on my truck. Cost is secondary in my equation, though, so I don't fret over it.

It's actually a heavy car to drive because of the weight and NO power steering. No A/C, no heat, either (although I have a Harbor Freight Tools cig lighter plug-in heater). However, I grew up on conventional transmission, so I love working the stick shift.

summer, sitting duck in the car with no AC? I can handle heat pretty good but not that good ;D ..

That's about the best condition 914 I've seen, I think. One used to leave me in the dust on Highway 17 when I used to drive my old Fiat Spider back and forth every day. His looked like it was falling apart... a lot of them look that way.

I was busy from 6:30 to 10:30 this morning helping the Indian economy through the Vista Full Employment Act, chatting with Microsoft Tech Support for SP1 which blew up on me. When my PC finally became operable, I picked up an email from joecos, ex-BAR member, asking if I moved to Sacto. He said he saw a clip about my car on KGO Ch 7, and it was filmed in West Sacramento. Hell, even reporters are ashamed to admit they were in bankrupt Vallejo.

Got to work and had a few more emails, CNN Headline News picked up the story. The clincher was lunch, the deli always have their TV's on CNN, and then I saw my car. Did some internet snooping, here are the links:
