Reef nutrition

Ordered these today

My icecap has what looks like a normal computer power cable outlet to connect to my pendant. my pendant has an unfinished cord. I happen ot have a 14gauge male counter part to mate with the ballast. Can I just splice it onto the ballast cord? Is there special precautions considering the ~2kv pulse on startup?

I was going to solder the wires together and double heatshrink them for insulation then use waterproof heatshrink over th whole splice.

Can't you just spring for the quick disconnects? They are much cleaner

Ya. I have one of these on hand
Wanted to take one of the ends and splice it to theunfinished lumenbrightend. Wasn't sure if there were any electrical concerns since the output of the ballast isn't normal line voltage.

Not the same thing. The quick disconnect lets you connect the wires nice and clean as you actually open up the receptacle and run the wires directly to the prongs and then screw it back together . There shouldn't be any concerns though. Also don't worry about which wire is connected to which (you only need to worry about the ground wire). The black and white wires are interchangable.

Can you tell you are getting electrical advice from and accountant?

lol. My only real concern was on if the cable from the ballast out and the cable on the mogul were literally normal 120V 14-gauge wiring.

..... /insert mass quantities of profuse verbiage

So I come home and on my doorstep is the missing parts (the 3bolts, mogal socket and mount).
I bolt things up.

Coralvue quality control is not good.

..... /insert more profuse verbiage

The misalignment between the reflector, the housing, and the mogal mount are off so much, that
1) it is hard to screw on the mount (holes do not line up well at all. In fact one of the screws semi stripped out despite being careful. Luckily it isn't a major issue)
2) it is impossible to "thread" the mogal socket through the two holes (in the reflector and housing) while keeping the bulb properly straight and for that matter, even able to be attached to the fixture.
3) scratches on the fixture (I didn't make a fuss over this initially, but now it is another glowing flaw).

I'll post pics as soon as I find my camera software (new comp install)

That is what I am thinking.

Just pissed that my excitement over a new light has turned into this ball of anger and will take at least 3 weeks to get running.

just dawned on me. aren't lumenarc and lumenbrights manufactured by the same people (might be represented by different companies, but same outsource)

Simply put, bad manufacturing resulted in a fixture where the mogal won't even fit properly.
The holes from the outer black fixture through the inner reflector do not line up at all.
This is a straight on image. You can see how the reflector cutout is way lower. They should line up.

I try and put in the mogal to the proper centered depth at the reflector focal point bulb depth. Because of the hole offset, the bulb goes in really crooked. The ceramic is touching the reflector on the top, yet the "flatest" I am able to get it, leaves a big gap on the bottom. between the mogal base and the slide base with the slots.

Here is a side view of the holder. Notice how crooked it is. Even if it was perfectly flat, the two holes still misalign too much to fit the bulb (I tried to do a straight install ignoring the mogul fixture)

Also, I didn't make a fuss over it because they were relatively minor, but now they sorta glow in the dark in light of the other frustrations. There are several small scratches on the housing.

I want a working unit one way be it a lumen bright or lumenarc or a full refund. It will happen. It is just a matter of how much pushing it will take.

Luckily, this is an alternate light for me and I don't have corals sitting without a fixture.

If I didn't have the icecap ballast and radium, I'd almost be tempted to build my LED setup instead lol (almost but not quite :p)

Nope. LA's are hand built right here in sunny CA, not China like the other ones :D
