Our mission

What topics would you like to hear in 2013 ?

I'm planning the speaking schedule for 2013 and thought I'd ask what you guys would like to hear. I have a few topics off the top of my head.

-carbon dosing & probiotics
-fish disease recognition & treatment
-tank design, installation, & maintenance

Your thoughts ?

Let's try to get David Cripe from the Coral Restoration Foundation. Restoring reefs in Florida.

Oops - David Cripe is from Monterey Bay Aquarium. Ken Nedimyer is from CRF. :D

- I'd be interested to hear from Dr. Tim regarding probiotics and supplements.
- I agree that a conservation/restoration talk is of high importance.
- There hasn't been a talk on filtration/skimming/water quality/algae turf scrubbers/GFO/carbon/phosban/reactors/dosing etc. since I've been attending.
- Is Randy Holmes-Farley ever available as a speaker?

This could almost be BAR panel type discussion.

Keep them coming, guys and gals! Whether it be topics or speakers, what do you want to learn more about?

My wish list of speakers include:
Matt Wittenrich
Sanjay Joshi
Matt Pedersen
Julian Sprung
James Fatherree
Martin Moe
Ken Nedimyer
Randy Holmes Farley

Each of these illustrious individuals have areas of expertise I would be interested to hear a talk on.

Coral identification might be fun.
Hopefully with two parts:
1) General overview and rough classifications. The basics.
2) How the experts really do it.

I'm just going to list off some topics since this could apply to people in the know as well as people just getting into the hobby just like me:
  • Aquascaping
  • Water flow
  • Water filtration and the different types
  • Fuge-sump design
  • Tank stand design
  • Canopy/cover design
  • What/when/how to dose
  • Light theory and lighting units
    Controllers
How to catch fish, effectively and efficiently
    How to quiet your tank
How to heat/cool your tank, effectively and efficiently
How to identify species of fish
Methods to doing water changes, effectively and efficiently
Three dimensional backgrounds and how to create them, effectively, efficiently, and safely

+1 - That would be very neat.

Latin classes anyone?

I pushed that one as a BAR BOD member years ago... but it never came about :(

I was thinking we could get a latin professor out, have members bring a few words and have the professor go over the roots of those.

I would also like to hear in depth about filtration. Now that I'm a member again it's good to take advantage of it.

Aquarium photography. How to get the best pics with your cell phone.
Heh, Instagram? :p

It's definitely interesting because you have to account for refraction and it can definitely "distort" some objects at non-perpendicular tank angles.
